The GIMP interface is very hard to get to grips with, especially if you know Photoshop. @CJ You could try out GimpShop, it's GIMP with a modified UI to match Photoshop, suits a lot of people. Google it :)
GIMP isn't that hard to use I don't think and if you come at it fresh without a lot of Photoshop knowledge to lose it's great. Especially when you look at the price tag hehe
There's a OSS UI group that's working on a completly new UI for GIMP; www.openusability.org I believe is the site (Season of Usability would be a good search term); GIMP (like many OSS projects) misses a UI to go with the features that are there and hard to understand for most users.
I do agree that having a background in PS makes it tough to learn anything except PaintShop Pro. Everyone mainly copies those two and rolls from there.

Gimp has a UI that is too hard for to enjoy. The learning curve is too high for me.

I had to learn GIMP as I didn't have Photoshop available on my work laptop. It does its job rather well in the end.

I like GIMP. I don't mind the UI too much. It could be better but once you get used to it, it works pretty well.

@dantheman: I don't know if it's really discontinued but latest binaries I can find are 2 years old.
